Numbers and Narratives: Seeking a Story Among the Indicators

Stacey Vanek Smith is a longtime public radio reporter and host, highly regarded for her insight and journalism on work, business, and economics. She co-created the Indicators podcast, is correspondent for NPR’s Planet Money and Marketplace, and authored Machiavelli for Women: Defend Your Worth, Grow Your Ambition, and Win the Workplace. Vanek Smith is also the FP&A keynote speaker at AFP 2022 coming in October; the title of her keynote presentation will be Numbers and Narratives: Seeking a Story Among the Indicators.

"What I think informs so much of my reporting, and even the way that I see the world now, is where value comes from, how we value things, how we put a number or a price on something. Everything from like stockpiling toilet paper in a pandemic to getting paid $20 an hour to make food deliveries … that pricing mechanism affects us all in so many ways, we're always navigating the shifting value of things, especially now because things have changed so much. There's a story behind all of these numbers."

The AFP 2022 FP&A Keynote is sponsored by Anaplan.
